eRTM Depth Migration

When imaging sharp, high contrast boundaries, legacy RTM implementations commonly show back-scattering and 'cross-talk' between wavefields. This is caused by RTM's reliance on the correlation of forward-propagated source wavefields and backward-propagated receiver wavefields. If these wavefields are not properly synchronized or contain multiples, converted waves, or incoherent energy, it can lead to cross-talk artifacts.

RTM is highly dependent on the accuracy of the velocity model used for imaging. An inaccurate velocity model will cause wavefields to misalign, leading to imaging noise and false reflectors. Numerical dispersion and grid artefacts are additional problems associated with legacy RTM.

eRTM from SIP resolves these issues by implementing proprietary domain imaging and absorbing boundary conditions with illumination compensation.

eRTM vs. Legacy RTM

Internally, the algorithm may minimise this using additional processing, such as filtering, but the problem remains in the imaging condition.
